Transference of resistance determinants by integrons is one of the important factors that can contribute to the increase in multi-resistant bacteria..The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of class 1 and 2 integrons in multi-drug resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strains isolated from children's clinical specimens. Materials and Methods: From April to June 2009, 71 Escherichia coli strains isolated from clinical specimens in Children Hospitals of Tabriz. Firstly, all isolates were tested for susceptibility to 13 antimicrobials using the disc diffusion method. Then, isolates with resistance to more than 2 unrelated antibiotic or Multi-drug resistant selected for integron detection and their classes determination by PCR-RFLP technique. Results: Antibiotic resistance patterns were as follows: amoxicillin 98.5%, co-trimoxazole 7.4%, cephalothin 76%, tetracycline 73.9%, nalidixic acid 52.1%, ceftazidime 43.6%, norfloxacin 39.4%, ciprofloxacin 36.6%, gentamicin 33.8%, chloramphenicol 14%, nitrofurantoin 8.4%, amikacin 12.6 % and imipenem 1.4%. Sixty one (85.9%) of tested strains were observed as MDR Class one integrons were detected in 24.6% MDR strains. intI1 and intI2 were detected respectively in 24.6% and 9.8% of MDR strains Conclusion: These results showed high resistance of E. coli to routine antibiotics, however, in consideration of low prevalence of integrons among these strains, we can conclude that antibiotic resistance genes in these strains presumably carried on elements othere than integrons.
